John’s father, Tommy Austin, spent years overseas in the Army working on air conditioning systems. When he returned home to the USA, he put that experience to work. Him and his two brothers built a reputation for reliable and honest service through Austin Heating & Air, later expanding into refrigeration.
By the time John was 14, he was already working alongside his father, learning the business from the ground up.
It all started in 1954.

Business was booming! Tommy and his brother Jimmy later opened the Austin appliance store, both selling and servicing appliances.
Pockets Sandwich Shop holds a special place in the hearts of many. Opened in 1982 by Tommy and his wife Nancy, God rest her soul.
Pockets was a Salisbury staple, built on long hours, steady hands, and a whole lot of love. They served every kind of sandwich, not buffet every night, Nancy’s homemade chicken salad and they were especially known for their pita sandwich “a meal in a pocket.” For many, it wasn’t just a restaurant — it was tradition.
For 19 years, Tommy and Nancy poured themselves into Pockets. Nancy was there day in and day out, and probably worked every one of those 19 years, welcoming customers like family. The doors officially closed in 2001, but the memories sure didn’t.
John worked at Pockets too, eventually bringing in his then-girlfriend and now-wife to work alongside the family. It wasn’t just a workplace; it was a part of their story.
Even now, when someone mentions Pockets in Salisbury, it brings a smile. It brings you back to simpler times, the taste of those sandwiches and the feeling of being part of something that mattered.
